Nobody who saw the June 2024 Presidential debate will forget the horrific spectacle of Joe Biden imploding on national TV. After months of friends and advisors saying Biden was sharp as a tack and ready to obliterate Donald Trump, the exact opposite unfolded, as a befuddled old man clearly looked like he had no idea what he was doing. A new book, “Uncharted: How Trump Beat Biden and Harris and the Odds in the Wildest Campaign in History” (Harper) details just how Biden’s inner circle tried to pull off the con job of the century. Chris Whipple is the author; he appeared on 710 WOR’s Mendte in the Morning program to provide his insight into how Trump defied the odds and the establishment to win re-election.
As Whipple recounted the details for Ken Rosato, sitting in for host Larry Mendte, he said it was unfathomable how many Biden officials deluded themselves into believing that the ill-prepared President had the stamina and acuity to outlast Trump in a debate, let alone a campaign: “The extraordinary thing about this is the extent to which Biden’s inner circle were really in a kind of fog of delusion and denial. They decided that- I mean, a number of them- thought he could run for re-election, were behind him remaining as the nominee, in effect sort of believing what they wanted to believe instead of their lying eyes.”
Whipple highlighted one incident when Biden lived up to the “Sleepy Joe” moniker that Trump tagged him with: “Ron Klain, Joe Biden’s first White House Chief of Staff, who was in charge of his debate prep, told me that when they arrived at Camp David, he was shocked by how out of it Biden was… At one point [Biden] wandered out of Aspen Lodge, the Presidential cabin, and walked out to the pool, sank into a lounge chair and fell sound asleep.”
