Thursday afternoon is when the Yankees and Mets open the 2025 baseball season, so that makes it the perfect time to talk about- football! Giants football, in particular; the franchise celebrated its 100th anniversary season last year by turning in one of their worst seasons ever, finishing at 3-14. General manager Joe Schoen has been filling in as many holes as possible, and on Tuesday night, the team addressed the gaping hole at quarterback by signing possible Hall of Famer Russell Wilson to a one-year contract. Wilson’s signing comes days after the team signed free agent Jamies Winston to the same slot. Gary Myers is the former Daily News NFL columnist and the author of six books on football. He appeared on 710 WOR’s Mendte in the Morning program to break down Big Blue’s off-season moves.
“These are just Band-Aids,” Myers explained to host Larry Mendte. “Russell Wilson ten years ago, that would have been a pretty good signing, but this is his fourth team in five years. To me, I think it indicates the Giants are going to skip taking a quarterback in the first round next month. This is not a strong quarterback draft. Maybe they’ll take somebody in the second round. But I think they look at Russell Wilson as a guy who can keep things respectable for this year, certainly do better that 3-14, which they did last year, but he’s definitely on the down side of his career.”
The Jets also came up, as Gang Green signed Justin Fields to be their new signal caller next year. Myers says there is irony in that move: “Who knew the Steelers were a quarterback factory?... It is kind of funny that both New York teams turned to guys in Pittsburgh, and Pittsburgh all last year seemed to be a team that had major quarterback problems.”
