Mayor Eric Adams says half of hotel rooms in New York City are now taken up by migrants.
More than 65,000 migrants have arrived since the start of the crisis and the mayor says another 13 to 15 buses are expected to arrive in the next day or so. He says the city doesn’t have many options to provide them with shelter.
“Everything is being considered,” Adams said.
The mayor has identified 20 schools where the gyms could be used to provide housing. However, the idea has been met with protests from parents and students.
“We reached out to our hotels. Many of them are saying we don't want to get into the shelter business. Many of them are going to price points that is just too hard for taxpayers to pay. Many of them are not suitable for housing migrants,” Adams said.
