Fairway Market Using Facial Recognition Software

A popular supermarket on the Upper West Side has begun using facial recognition technology to deal with a crime problem in the city.

Fairway Market says it’s dealing with the problem of repeat shoplifters which is driving up prices for all customers. The store says it’s following the law in its use of the software.

This follows the controversy surrounding Madison Square Garden using facial recognition technology. Critics have accused owner James Dolan of using it to keep those with lawsuits against him and his company out of the building.
