New Yorkers May Be Forced To Buy Parking Permits

A bill being considered by the state legislature would require New Yorkers to pay to park outside their own home.

The State Senate measure would charge drivers $30 a month for a parking permit. The plan would generate an estimated $400 million a year for the MTA, while also discouraging people from New Jersey and Long Island from driving into the city and taking up parking spots.

The proposal is one of a series of plans that would help fund the MTA. State Senate Democrats have rejected Governor Kathy Hochul’s proposal to raise the payroll tax.
