About 60,000 app-based delivery workers in New York City could soon be getting a big raise.
The Department of Consumer and Worker Protection is proposing that they be paid $23.82 per hour. That would include a $19.86 base rate, plus additional money to cover expenses and to compensate for their lack of insurance.
“This new proposed minimum pay rate will help some of our city’s hardest workers earn a more stable paycheck,” Deputy Mayor Maria Torres-Springer said.
Currently, these workers make a little over $11 an hour after taking tips and expenses into consideration.
City officials admit the plan would cause the average food order to increase in cost by about $5.
