New Yorkers are choosing their next governor on this election day.
Governor Kathy Hochul inherited the job in August 2021 following the resignation of former Governor Andrew Cuomo. She’s now trying to become the first woman ever to be elected governor of New York.
Republican Lee Zeldin has surged in the polls in recent weeks, pulling almost even with Hochul as voters increasingly make crime a priority when casting their ballot. He has promised to declare a crime emergency on his first day in office, while Hochul has downplayed the crime problem as a scare tactic.
If he wins, Zeldin would be the first Republican elected governor of New York since George Pataki 20 years ago.
