Masks No Longer Required On The Subway

Governor Kathy Hochul has lifted the MTA’s mask mandate. Beginning immediately, masks are now optional on the subways, trains and buses.

“It was there for the right reason. It protected health. And now we're in a far different place than we had been,” Hochul said.

The mandate remained in place, even as other mass transit agencies like NJ Transit lifted their requirements in recent months. Hochul said she made this decision because of improving trends in the case numbers.

“We're watching for variants, we're watching for any updates in vaccines, but we do believe that we're in a good place right now, especially if New Yorkers take advantage of this booster,” Hochul said.
