Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg will be in New Jersey today to help break ground on a brand new Portal Bridge.
The current swing-bridge over the Hackensack River is 110 years old and often breaks down, causing big delays and disruptions for train passengers heading into and out of New York City. The new two-track bridge will be elevated 50-feet above the water so that marine traffic can pass underneath without having to open and close.
Before the pandemic, the Portal Bridge more than 450 Amtrak and NJ Transit trains traveled over the bridge on a daily basis, carrying more than 200,000 passengers.
