New York Reports First Case of UK Variant

A man from Saratoga County has become the first person in New York with the UK strain of coronavirus.

The patient is 60 years old and works at a jewelry store. He is symptomatic but his condition is improving.

“He did not travel recently, so this suggests that it's in the community, it was community spread as opposed to having traveled to the UK,” Governor Andrew Cuomo said.

Cuomo and other officials are concerned about the variant because it’s more contagious. The governor said that could cause the state’s positivity rate to increase.

“From a public health point of view now it's about contact tracing, and this UK strain is reported to be 70 percent more contagious than the normal COVID strain,” Cuomo said.
