Not Wearing a Mask on Buses and Subways Could Get You Fined

Governor Cuomo and the MTA are warning riders to wear a mask on the city’s subways and buses, or face the risk of a $50 fine.

“We want to make sure that people feel comfortable coming back to public transportation,” Governor Cuomo said.

The governor said mask compliance on public transportation is about 90 percent. But he said everyone needs to wear a mask to ensure public safety.

“If they don't have a mask, MTA will give them a mask to wear. If they refuse to wear a mask, they will be evicted from the system. If they're not wearing a mask, we will enforce the mask wearing rule,” Governor Cuomo said.

The fines will take effect on Monday.
