New Yorkers Say Take Down Teddy Roosevelt Statue

As society considers the future of statues across the country, there’s a debate over a statue of former President Theodore Roosevelt outside the Museum of Natural History.

“I know Teddy Roosevelt wasn’t bad, but I think the statue itself kind of depicts the wrong image,” one woman told WOR’s Alice Stockton-Rossini.

The statue shows Roosevelt riding a horse, while a Native American man and African man walk beside him.

“If someone has the perception of it being racist, then it’s something we need to consider especially given the situation that’s happening,” another woman said.

The museum already announced it plans to take down the statue. On Sunday, a group of protesters rallied to save it.

“To me they don’t look as though those two figures are being suppressed or oppressed,” one man said.
