Thousands Of Kids Get Free Books From “Book Lady” On Halloween

Reading has always been a passion for Judy Newman and she wants to pass on that excitement she had for books as a child to other kids. So for the last 25 years, she’s been inviting trick-or-treating families to her Montclair, New Jersey home to pick out several books for themselves, free of charge.

Newman, now the executive vice president and “reader in chief” of Scholastic Book Clubs, calls her event Trick or Read. She says thousands of kids visit her every year to add to their book collection and they call her the “Book Lady.” Some of the kids who came years ago are now adults who bring their own little ones to get books.

“My mission is to show kids that they don’t have to read something they don’t like,” the Book Lady says. “But they do have to keep trying to find a book they will love.”
