Correction Officer Omar Martin was killed over the weekend when his car was hit by another vehicle involved in a high-speed chase with Hillside, New Jersey, police according to a story posted on cbslocal.com.
Witnesses say Omar was sitting in his Ford Mustang when a Nissan Altima plowed into the side of his vehicle causing it to slam into a utility pole.
The three men fleeing the police have not been identified. Two had to be transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The third man was taken to the Hillside police headquarters.
A co-worker and lifelong friend Carlton Easton said of the accident, "It's heart-wrenching right now."
Martin had just moved in with his elderly mother to take care of her.
Northern State Prison officials released a statement that read, our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Officer Omar Martin. He was taken too soon and our blue family is devastated.
