Another Bicyclist Loses Her Life In A Deadly Accident

A 30-year-old bicyclist was killed when she swerved to avoid hitting an open van door and ran into a tractor-trailer. The unidentified bicyclist was riding on 36th Street near Third Avenue in Sunset Park, Brooklyn when the accident occurred.

The driver of the tractor-trailer stopped the truck a few blocks from the accident after a bystander informed him that he had hit the woman. According to an article published in the New York Daily News, the driver of the tractor-trailer has not been charged.

Witness George Alvarez who was working near the scene when the accident occurred said, "The driver was in shock when he opened the door and saw the victim."

Assemblyman Felix Ortiz, who represents the district the accident occurred in said, "Drivers need to be more cautious. This can be avoided."

Last week Mayor de Blasio announced a new plan to improve bike safety throughout the five boroughs before he leaves office.

So far this year 18 bicyclists have been killed while riding in NYC.
