Power Knocked Out For Thousands In New York City

A transformer fire shut down power in parts of New York City Saturday evening. The outage shut down traffic lights, halted elevators and locked up subway service.

Reports as of 9 p.m. Saturday by Con Edison said that more than 50,000 customers were without power in an areas that included Midtown Manhattan and the Upper West Side. The FDNY reported the outages impacted 71st Street south to 42 Street and east from the West Side Highway to 5th Avenue.
