Port Authority Wants To Raise Fares and Tolls

The Port Authority is planning widespread fare and toll hikes to pay for major construction projects.

Cash tolls at the bridges and tunnels would increase by $1, while drivers with E-Z Pass would pay $1.25 more. The cost to ride the air trains at the airports would increase to $7.75 and PATH riders would see their multi-trip discounts reduced.

The Port Authority also wants a $4 surcharge on taxis and for-hire vehicles at the airports. Drivers are already protesting the planned increase.

Before any fare and toll hike takes effect, there will be a series of six public hearings. Three will be held in New York and another three in New Jersey.

The Port Authority said the additional money would help go towards improvements at the airports, the bridges, tunnels, terminals and at the PATH system.
