Upscale NY Neighborhood Will Appeal Opening Of Homeless Shelter

The proposed 150 man homeless shelter designated to be opened on ‘Billionaires Row' has been green-lighted by State Supreme Court Justice Alexander Tisch.

The shelter, which will occupy the renovated Park Savoy Hotel on 58th Street, was selected by the de Blasio administration last year.

The plan to create a homeless shelter in such an upscale neighborhood sparked a lawsuit brought by members of the 58th Street Coalition who claim the building is unsafe and should not be permitted to operate as a homeless shelter.

Randy Mastro, the attorney for the 58th Street Coalition, said the group was disappointed in today's decision and plans to pursue an immediate appeal.

Social Services Commissioner Steven Barks told the New York Post, "We will begin serving our neighbors in need at this location as soon as possible."

Commissioner Barks added, Justice Tisch's decision is a win for hard-working New Yorkers experiencing homelessness.
