MTA Wants Police To Patrol Buses

MTA officials are calling on the NYPD to put police officers on buses to cut down on fare beating.

The MTA said that more than 20 percent of bus riders don’t pay, costing the agency $127 million every year. That’s on top of the $98 million it loses out on because of subway fare evaders.

“They are law breakers. They are people who don’t give a damn about their fellow passengers,” MTA board member Charles Moerdler said.

The NYPD said it’s working on a pilot program to address fare beating, but warned they don’t have the necessary manpower to stop it system wide.
