New Yorkers Save a Bird Instead of Flipping One

Brooklyn cops and animal control officers saved a downed bird of prey from a hectic three-way intersection in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Wednesday night.

A group of nearly 100 onlookers watched as authorities caged an injured Hawk that came to roost in the intersection of Lorimar, Lee, and Wallabout Streets last night during rush hour traffic.

Several witnesses told the New York Post that the bird attempted to fly off several times but seemed to lack the strength to take flight.

Francisco Paetz, who saw the incident unfold, said: "It was kind of scary that it was in the middle of the street and cars were going by, I was afraid it was going to get run over by a car." Paez added, to protect the bird from passing vehicles he used his coat to corral the bird and move it toward the side of the road until help could arrive.

Police turned the bird over to Animal Control for a complete medical checkup.
