Man Steals More than $1,000 from NJ Girl Scouts

Police in New Jersey are looking for a man who stole more than $1,000 from a group of Girl Scouts.

The Girl Scout troop was selling cookies at the Woodbridge Center mall on Friday afternoon when the alleged thief approached their table.  They were outside the upper level of Boscov’s near a Chick Fil A when the suspect approached their table.

He apparently expressed interest in buying cookies and then made off with an envelope that contained $500 in cash and multiple checks.  The envelope was being taken to the bank to be deposited, but a Troop Leader had stopped to help the girls working at the table.

Before blinking an eye the envelope was swiped when least expected,” Troop Leader Jessica Cunha Medina said on Facebook.

She described the suspect as standing about 6’2” and being dressed in  a green jacket.  He was with an elderly woman who had a red walker.

The troop alerted mall security who then called Woodbridge Police.

“Honest  to God, the good in my heart wants to truly believe this is a  misunderstanding and he simply didn’t know or was aware of what he was  doing,” Medina said.

The suspect was apparently caught on mall surveillance cameras.  The troop is asking anyone with information to come forward.

“Our  Troop’s main focus is about giving back to the community.  We currently  wish we could have assisted the people desperately in need and now wish  they would’ve just asked our Troop for assistance opposed to going as  far as stealing from the troop,” Medina said.
