Texas Cops Use Cardboard Cutouts To Get Speeding Motorists To Slow Down

The Williamson County Sheriff's Office is trying something new to clamp down on motorists who speed through the Texas county. Instead of increasing the number of speed traps or installing speed cameras, officials are placing cardboard cutouts of an officer holding a radar gun on the side of the road.

“When you're going 20, 30 miles per hour and you see the silhouette you're immediately breaking, slowing down and that's exactly what we are trying to do,” Williamson County Sheriff Robert Chody explained to FOX7.

The cardboard cutouts are being tested in school zones and other areas where speeding is a major safety concern.

"When [drivers] enter a school zone, they see him with a radar gun," Lt. Gary Haston told KXAN. "They believe he's actually radar-ing traffic, so therefore they're going to slow down."

While the cardboard cutouts, which were made from a photo of an actual police officer, will stand alone most of the time, the department will sometimes have real officers nearby ready to nab any motorists who continue to speed.

“Slow down because you never know if it's the real deal or not and the only way you'll know is if you meet Deputy Wolf, and not the cutout but the real deputy,” said Chody.
