Senator Bob Menendez is blasting his Republican opponent Bob Hugin as a “slime ball” after a controversial campaign ad.
The TV spot run by the Hugin campaign accuses Menendez of sleeping with underage prostitutes.
“This deceitful, despicable attack ad tells you everything you need to know about Republican Bob Hugin - that he’s a slime ball, he’s a misogynist and he’s a liar,” Menendez said.
The campaign ad calls the Senator a hypocrite. It opens with a statement from Menendez asking when society will begin to believe and trust women. A narrator then asks “What about the underage girls who accused you?”
“These are lies. I know it. You know it and Bob Hugin damn sure knows it,” Menendez said.
Hugin claims the ad was based on FBI investigations.
This comes as a new Quinnipiac University poll shows Menendez with a 7 point lead in his re-election bid. It found that Menendez has the support of 51 percent of likely voters, compared with 44 percent for Hugin.
"The question for Bob Hugin is: can he win over those voters who say they are undecided or are backing Menendez and indicate they may change their mind? It will come down to how he defines himself in these last few weeks before Election Day as nearly 30 percent of voters say they haven't heard enough about him to form an opinion of him,” Quinnipiac polling analyst Mary Snow said
