Mayor Bill de Blasio has signed legislation that creates a third option for New Yorkers on their birth certificate.
Beginning on January 1st, 2019 those who identify as transgender and gender non-binary will be able to mark “X” as their gender. The measure removes the current requirement that people get approval from medical and mental health professionals first.
Everyone has a right to their own identity. Everyone has a right to be themselves. That's why New Yorkers can now change their gender to M, F, or X on their birth certificate. “This new legislation will empower all New Yorkers – especially our transgender and gender non-binary residents – to have birth certificates that better reflect their identity, and it furthers the City's commitment to defending the rights of our LGBTQ community,” Mayor de Blasio said.
