Wildwood Mayor Defends Cops in Viral Video

The mayor of Wildwood, New Jersey is standing up for police officers who were caught on video punching a 20-year-old woman on the beach.

The video posted online shows one officer hitting Emily Weinman, while a second officer tries to handcuff her.

Mayor Ernie Troiano said the officers were cracking down on underage drinking on the beach and asked Weinman for her ID.  Troiano said she refused, the situation escalated, and Weinman spit at an officer and kicked him in the groin.

An Internal Affairs Investigation was immediately initiated into this matter and the involved officers have been reassigned to administrative duty pending the outcome of a full and thorough investigation,” the Wildwood Police Department said on its Facebook page.

Police Chief Robert Regalbuto said he finds the video to be “alarming,” but added that he doesn’t want to rush to judgment until he has the results of the investigation.  Body camera footage is expected to be released in the near future.

Weinman has been charged with 2-counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, aggravated assault by spitting bodily fluids at/on a police officer, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, obstruction and minor in possession of alcohol.

The police department is asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has additional video to come forward.
