Nanny Convicted of Killing Two Kids

An Upper West Side nanny has been convicted of murder in the killing two young children that she cared for.

Yoselyn Ortega was watching 6-year-old Lulu Krim and 2-year-old Leon in 2012 when she stabbed and killed both of them in the bathroom of their apartment.  She then attempted to commit suicide when the children’s mother returned home.

“For the past five years, Kevin and Marina Krim have lived through the worst nightmare any parents could ever endure,” Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance said.

Attorneys for Ortega put forward an insanity defense, while prosecutors alleged that the nanny was upset because she felt the children’s parents were working her too hard.

“My heart continues to go out to Kevin and Marina Krim and the entire Krim family; as a father of two myself, I can’t begin to imagine the pain they felt and continue to feel,” Vance said.

Jurors said they were initially divided when they began deliberating the case.

Prosecutors will seek a sentence of life in prison for Ortega when she’s sentenced in May.

Today, a jury rightly held Yoselyn Ortega accountable for the horrific slayings of Leo and Lulu Krim, and I thank the members of that jury for their diligence throughout this incredibly difficult and heartbreaking trial,” Vance said.
