12-Year-Old Dies in Long Island Sailing Accident

A 12-year-old boy has been killed in a sailing accident on Long Island.

The boy was taking lessons in Northport Harbor at the Centerport Yacht Club on Tuesday afternoon when he was struck by a propeller.

The incident started moments earlier when the sailboat was intentionally capsized as part of the lesson.  The 12-year-old was pulled out of the water by the 18-year-old instructor, but then fell overboard.

“When that Zodiac went to accelerate to bring the child to safety, that child again fell off the Zodiac and became entangled in the propeller,” Sergeant James Scimone said.

Scimone said no one is to blame and that the instructor did as he was taught to do.  He said it was just a “terrible accident.”
