Two NYPD officers on patrol in Staten Island saw a man standing on the corner of Jersey Street and Benzinger Avenue at approximately 3:00 am Wednesday.
The man appeared to be holding on to something that was burning.
As the police slowed their vehicle to question the man, the suspect threw the lit device at a parked NYPD SUV.
The Molotov cocktail crashed to the ground inches away from the police vehicle but failed to ignite.
The police gave chase but the suspect escaped.
No injuries were reported in the incident.
