The case against Senator Bob Menendez continues to expand. The Garden State legislator was already accused of accepting bribes and keeping thousands of dollars in cash and gold bars stashed in his house; now word has broken that Menendez could be facing espionage charges, as he is accused of passing sensitive information about US Embassy employees in Cairo to the Egyptian government. NorthJersey.com columnist Mike Kelly appeared on 710 WOR’s Len Berman and Michael Riedel in the Morning program to explain the widening investigation into the senator’s conduct.
 “One of the issues of working overseas in an embassy is that you don’t live in a compound, generally,” Kelly explained to Berman and Riedel. “If you are trying to keep secret where you work, you should have the right to do so, particularly if you’re a member of the American foreign service. Now this information is in the hands of the Egyptian authorities. What they plan to do with it, I don’t know, but Egypt, as you know, is not the most stable place in the world… and for a US senator to do something like this, it’s highly questionable, at the very least.”
Yet, Menendez refuses to heed calls to resign, or explain his actions to his constituents--which is why Kelly almost wants to see him run again for the post. “If he is going to be a public servant here in New Jersey, he needs to start talking to the voters… He’s in a monastery of his own, I think, of his own making. So, I almost, I’m kind of almost hoping--and probably, lots of people disagree with me--that he runs for office, so we can all get out there and question him and he’ll have to debate exactly how he was conducting business like this.”
