President Joe Biden is expected to officially announce his decision to run for re-election tomorrow. Biden, already America’s oldest-ever president, has many glaring drawbacks as a candidate, but so does his likely opponent, Donald Trump. ABC News political analyst Steve Roberts appeared on 710 WOR’s Len Berman and Michael Riedel in the Morning program to highlight what Biden must do to win an election scenario where neither candidate seems palatable.
“The Biden strategy is clear,” Roberts told Berman and Riedel. “Package him as much as they can, minimize live events where he could say something stupid, try to stay away from events where his obvious feebleness can lead to misstatements and campaign fodder. We know that every single time he bobbles something, it’s going to be in a Republican ad the next day.”
An ABC/Washington Post poll says that 58% of Democrats and Democrat leading independents want a Democrat candidate other than Biden. The disillusionment with younger voters is greater, but Roberts feels there is one huge ace up Biden’s sleeve to attract them. “The abortion decision, particularly for young people who are of child-bearing age, they’re the ones who are most energized by the abortion decision, so that’s the secret weapon for the Democrats, and that’s what they hope to use to bring young voters to the polls, which are really going to be very critical to the outcome next year.”
