Suddenly Appearing NJ Island Floats Out To Sea

A mysterious island that suddenly appeared in a South Jersey river is now out to sea.

The massive chunk that broke off from marshland last Thursday was floating in the Metedeconk River in Brick Township, crashing into boat docks. Neighbors say the island was about one-hundred feet long and 30 to 40 feet wide.

They used their hands to push it into the middle of the river until the Coast Guard and New Jersey State Police took over, dragging it away. Climate experts say the bizarre incident was triggered by high tides, rapid currents and more rain than usual.
