Plastic Bags Banned in New York

A ban on plastic bags has begun in New York state.

Beginning on Sunday, businesses also began collecting a 5-cent fee on paper bags used in the city.

It was estimated that New Yorkers used 10 billion plastic bags every single year. That resulted in 91,000 tons of plastic ending up in landfills.

Customers using SNAP and WIC will be exempt from the 5-cent fee for paper bags.
