When the Tampa Buccaneers jumped out to a 12-3 lead in yesterday’s game against the Giants, it’s sure looked like rookie QB Daniel Jones was going to pick up where veteran QB Eli Manning had left off.
Until the rookie simply took off.
Because Jones put the Giants on his back—without the aid of star running back Saquon Barkley, who was lost early on the game to a high ankle sprain—and rallied the New York Football Giants from an 18-point first-half deficit to a 32-31 victory.
And he did it with this four TD performance that saw him bookend an opening rushing TD with a 7-yard run on fourth down that put the Giants ahead for the first time with 1:16 remaining in the game.
In between that, all he did was throw his first TD pass—hitting tight end Evan Engram in stride running across the field for a 75-yard touchdown on the opening possession of the second half—and throw a pinpoint strike into the arms of Sterling Shepard in the corner of the end zone for a touchdown, cutting the lead to 28-25.
That set up the game winning run, as Jones would finish 23-of-36 for 336 yards and a perfect record as a starter of 1-0.
