A 13-year-old boy with autism is safe thanks to a quick-thinking transit worker in New York City. Subway train operator Hopeton Kiffin says he was going about 15 miles per hour when he saw a red jacket down on the tracks and someone on the platform pointing, so he stopped and saw that it was a child.
The teen was wandering along the tracks of a Brooklyn subway station and Kiffin helped him on to the train using the door to the operator’s cab. Once the boy was safely inside, he drove him to the next stop, where he was turned over to police to be reunited with his family.
“It was just part of my job,” Kiffin says. “I was trying to do what is right, and I’m a father and an uncle, so I felt protective of him. He was in a dangerous spot on the track.”
