The crooks that pulled the jewelry heist on a Lindenhurst, Long Island home are in for a huge letdown when they try to sell the 1998 New York Yankees World Series Championship ring they scored during the robbery…because it's a fake.
The unidentified family that reported the theft to Suffolk County Police said they did lose $50,000 worth of bracelets, watches, and necklaces but the fake championship ring was only worth about $50.
Replica rings look like the real thing but are generally made of cheap metals and festooned with cut glass instead of priceless diamonds and gemstones.
The owner of the fake championship ring told police that he bought the $50 replica ring from a Connecticut jeweler after the Yankees won the title in 1998.
The New York Post described the faux bling as, gold in color with the words "World Champions" and "Tradition" engraved on the sides of the ring, while the Yankees logo and the year 1998 appear on the front.
The Suffolk County Crime Stoppers is offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest in the crime. Call 1-800-200-TIPS if you have any information on the robbery.
