Police in the Bronx have shot and killed a man who turned towards them with a knife.
Two officers were called to a home on Prospect Avenue at 7:40 p.m. on Monday night to deal with a dispute between a tenant and a landlord.
“They were informed that a male armed with a knife was chasing another male in the street. The officers then encountered the male subject, armed with a combat-type knife, chasing another male,” NYPD Chief of Patrol Rodney Harrison said.
The officers confronted the 52-year-old tenant and ordered him to drop the weapon. Harrison said despite numerous orders, the individual refused to put down the knife.
“The subject had turned towards the officers with the knife in hand and the two officers discharged their firearm striking the subject,” NYPD Chief of Patrol Rodney Harrison said.
The suspect was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital where he was pronounced dead. His name has not been released. A military-style knife was recovered at the scene.
The shooting was captured on police body cameras. The landlord was not injured in the dispute.
Three police officers were injured while responding to the scene. They were traveling in a squad car that hit a pole. Those injuries are said to be minor.
An investigation continues into the shooting.
