MTA May Ban Some Food on the Subway

The MTA is considering a plan that would ban some food from the subway system.

MTA Chairman Joe Lhota said when people eat on the subway, the trash sometimes winds up on the tracks.  A track fire in Harlem on Monday was blamed on garbage that piled up.

“These fires all start with trash being thrown down there.  The photographs show that they were newspapers, as well as coffee cups,” Lhota said.

It’s unclear what kind of foods would be banned.  Lhota said the MTA is currently drafting a plan and is looking at recommendations about what kinds of food are appropriate.

“The goal is no fires, plain and simple,” Lhota said.
