All lanes are back open on the upper level of the George Washington bridge after a harrowing scene there Friday morning when police rescued a would-be jumper, who was armed with a pellet gun.
Traffic was stopped on the bridge for about an hour just after 10 a.m. Friday as police responded to rescue a 36-year-old man from Little Ferry, NJ, who was telling bystanders he was about to jump from the bridge, police said.
The man was precariously positioned off the pedestrian path on the south side of the bridge's upper level, reports CBS New York.
NYPD rescue units and Port Authority Police worked together to talk the man back on the pedestrian side of the railing, reports said.
Though the man was armed with a pellet gun, no injuries were reported. Officers pounced on him after he turned over the weapon.
He is now in police custody.
The bridge's westbound lanes were reopened at 11 a.m. The eastbound lanes followed about 20 minutes later.
