ABC News White House Correspondent Jonathan Karl says President Trump’s press conference on Thursday was like “hand-to-hand combat.”

He told WOR’s “Len Berman and Todd Schnitt” the event was freewheeling and Trump seemed to be “riffing” throughout.

“I’ve been in that same room for press conferences by Bill Clinton, by George W. Bush, by Barack Obama.  I have never seen anything remotely like that,” Karl said.

He said during other recent news conferences, Trump avoided reporters that could potentially ask difficult questions.  Karl said that led to a lot of pent up energy amongst reporters and Trump reacted to that.

“He loves this stuff.  Not only did he get feistier, he got more energized and he left that press conference thinking it was a homerun and his senior staff told me look for him to do more of those,” Karl said.
