Discounts To Be Offered For Congestion Pricing

Plans for congestion pricing are moving forward, but the MTA is confirming that discounts will be available for some drivers.

Those who use the East and Hudson River tunnels will receive a discount that ranges from $4 to $7. The discount won't be available on crossings outside the congestion zone, such as the George Washington Bridge.

The MTA says the idea of the discount is to discourage drivers from using the free crossings, such as the Brooklyn Bridge, which would cause a traffic problem there. However, board members say they're reluctant to hand out too many discounts and exemptions because that would drive up the cost for everyone else.

Exact tolling still needs to be decided. However, drivers will be charged as much as $23 for traveling south of 60th Street.
