8-year-old Rucky Friedrich of Orange County New York died when a classroom cabinet in Kiryas Joel Union Free School fell on her.
The incident occurred when the child climbed on a chair to reach something from the cabinet. The cabinet ripped away from the wall under the force of her weight and fell on her and caused severe head trauma.
According to a story posted on nbcnewyork.com, the police were called to the school after one of the two teachers that were in the room at the time called 911.
First responders rushed Friedrich to Good Samaritan Hospital where emergency room doctors pronounced her dead due to blunt force trauma to the head.
Superintendent Joel Petlin of the Upstate school said "We are devastated by the tragic accident which took the life of one of our students this afternoon. We are cooperating with the police investigation and we are providing grief counseling to students and staff affected by this tragedy. Our heartfelt prayers go out to the family and community at this difficult time."
