New York City To Honor Women With Four New Monuments

Mayor Bill de Blasio’s administration has announced that four new monuments will be put up around New York City to honor female leaders.

The monuments will include Billie Holiday, Elizabeth Jennings Graham, Dr. Helen Rodriguez Trias, and Katherine Walker.

“We cannot tell the story of New York City without recognizing the invaluable contributions of the women who helped build and shape it,” First Lady Chirlane McCray said.

The Holiday statue will be placed near Queens Borough Hall and the Graham monument is going up near Grand Central Terminal. The Trias statue will be established at St. Mary’s Park in the Bronx and Walker will be honored at the Staten Island Ferry Landing.

“Public monuments should tell the full history and inspire us to realize our potential – not question our worth. In honoring these four trailblazers today, New Yorkers will have the opportunity to see powerful women who made history receive the recognition they deserve,” McCray said.
