New Yorkers Can Now List “X” as Gender on Birth Certificate

Mayor Bill de Blasio has signed legislation that creates a third option for New Yorkers on their birth certificate.

Beginning on January 1st, 2019 those who identify as transgender and gender non-binary will be able to mark “X” as their gender.  The measure removes the current requirement that people get approval from medical and mental health professionals first.

“This new legislation will empower all New Yorkers – especially our transgender and gender non-binary residents – to have birth certificates that better reflect their identity, and it furthers the City's commitment to defending the rights of our LGBTQ community,” Mayor de Blasio said.
