Jersey City Decriminalizes Marijuana

Beginning on Thursday, most people caught with marijuana in Jersey City won’t be arrested.

Instead, people will face a fine up to $50 or five hours of community service.  Some might have marijuana charges dismissed altogether.  Before now, it could have resulted in jail time.

Advocates say the change will make the criminal justice system fairer in the city.

Statewide, Governor Phil Murphy is pushing to legalize recreational marijuana.  However, that effort remains stalled.
