Mets Split Wild Doubleheader Through The Raindrops

GAME 1:

  • Jacob deGrom got the start for the Mets
  • Mets got a run in the first when Devin Mesoraco walked with the bases loaded, Mets led 1-0 in the first.
  • Mets added on in the 4th when Luis Guillorme tacked on an RBI double in the 4th and the Mets led 2-0.
  • In the bottom of the 6th it started to rain…a little..and the tarp came on the field. We had a short rain delay and it was unclear if deGrom’s day was done.
  • deGrom came back out, and proceeded to continue his brilliance, striking out Nick Markakis for his 8th strikeout, just like he had never had a delay.
  • In the 7th, deGrom started to show some signs of fatigue. Tyler Flowers stroked a solo HR to cut the lead to 2-1, with no one out.
  • deGrom then K’d Swanson, got Pinch Hitter Kurt Suzuki to pop out to short, and finally got Ender Inciarte to ground out. 115 pitches, one run, 8 strikeouts and one rain delay - a masterful performance for the unquestioned Mets ace.
  • Unfortunately, deGrom wouldn’t factor into the decision as Seth Lugo couldn’t keep the lead, and Nick Markakis’ sac fly tied the game at 2 in the bottom of the 8th
  • Top 9. Devin Mesoraco, who has been a great addition, stroked a solo home run and the Mets had a 3-2 lead in the 9th.
  • Seth Lugo stayed on into the bottom of the 9th, when Johan Camargo walked, then after a pop out, Charlie Culberson hit a two-run, Walk-Off home run for the Braves, and the Mets fall 4-3 in game one of the doubleheader.
  • Mets awaited the weather to see if Game two would start on time, if at all….which led to

Game 2

  • First Pitch – 10:07 PM! A 2 hour and 57 minute rain delay ended and the Mets got on the board shortly after that. Adrian Gonzalez knocked an RBI single and newly off the DL Kevin Plewecki reached on an error as a run scored and the Mets had a 2-0 Lead.
  • PJ Conlon, up again from Vegas to make an emergency start, was on the hill for the Mets in the second game of the double header.
  • Kurt Suzuki got one back with a solo home run in the bottom of the second
  • Top Third, Brandon Nimmo went yard, a solo shot as well, and the Mets were back up by two again, 3-1
  • Freddy Freeman tied the game against Conlon with a 2 RBI single and the game was tied at 3-3
  • PJ Conlon was gone shortly after that, and Hansel Robles was in
  • Kurt Suzuki’s Sac Fly drove in the go ahead run, 4-3 Mets,  Conlon was still on the hook for the run
  • Robles settled down and gave the Mets a shot.
  • Mets took back that lead in the 6th when Amed Rosario singled in a couple of runs and the Mets were back in front 5-4
  • Robert Gsellman came in in the bottom of the 6th
  • Braves loaded the bases with just one out, and Nick Markakis hit and infield single to tie the game at 5, but that was it as they left the bases loaded, 6 innings into the books.
  • In The 7th, Luis Guillorme blooped in two more, Mets back in front 7-5.
  • Amed Rosario singled to make it 8-5 NY
  • Jacob Rhame pitched a perfect bottom of the 7th.
  • Jeurys Familia came on for a two inning save, and the Mets split the day winning the very late nightcap, 8-5.
  • Mets will be right back at it later today against the Braves with a 7:35 first pitch (weather permitting!) Mets on Deck at 6:05 (Thumbnail Credit: Getty Images)
