Speed May Be Factor in Deadly Bus Crash

Authorities are investigating whether excessive speed played a role in a deadly bus accident in Queens on Monday morning.

Three people were killed when a Dahlia bus slammed into an MTA bus on Northern Boulevard.  The driver of the private charter bus, a passenger on the MTA bus and a pedestrian all died.

“These buses spun around.  That requires an enormous amount of speed,” MTA Chairman Joe Lhota said.

A speedometer recovered from the Dahlia bus was stuck at 60 mph, which is more than twice the speed limit.  However, officials said that doesn’t necessarily mean the bus was traveling that fast.

Authorities are also investigating whether the Dahlia bus ran a red light.
