Subway Littering Fines Doubling to $100

Governor Andrew Cuomo is increasing fines for littering in the subway system to $100 to try and reduce delays.

“Littering is not only illegal but dangerous and directly causes hundreds of thousands of delays, inconveniencing millions of New Yorkers,” Governor Cuomo said in a statement.

The MTA will also run a public awareness campaign that makes riders aware of the problems littering can cause.  Cuomo said the trash can cause track fires, which directly lead to delays.  He said there are 700 such incidents every year.

“This initiative will help stop littering-related delays at the source, improving reliability and helping the MTA deliver the subway service that New Yorkers deserve,” Cuomo said.

Last year, the MTA also introduced a new initiative for trash removal and water mitigation efforts.
