Homeless Numbers Highest Since 2005

Despite Mayor de Blasio's attempt to help homeless people get off the street, the number has risen from 2,794 last year to 3,892 this year, a 39% increase.

In December of 2015, the mayor's office added 137 workers to the Department of Homeless Services and upped the NYPD's Homeless outreach unit by 40 officers.

The Home-Stat initiative was said to be fully operational in April of 2016 and was designed to convince the homeless, street dwellers, to take advantage of the city's numerous shelters.

City leaders could not give the exact amount of money the city has spent on the Home-Stat initiative.
