De Blasio Calls For Extension of Mayoral Control

Mayor Bill de Blasio is pushing Albany to extend mayoral control of schools in New York City.

If the state legislature doesn’t act by Wednesday’s deadline, school boards will be brought back.  Mayor de Blasio said under the old system, too many schools were failing and there was no accountability.

“That is what is hanging in the balance here – whether our schools are actually going to work for all our children or not.  Because in the past they did not work for all our children, and we all saw with our own eyes the past in this city was not fair,” de Blasio said.

The mayor said before mayoral control was implemented, barely 50 percent of high school students in the city graduated.  He said that number reached 72.5 percent at the end of the last school year.
