Fire Breaks Out on United Plane at Newark

Newark Airport was temporarily closed on Tuesday night after the engine of a United Airlines flight caught on fire.

Flight 1579 was set to take off for San Francisco with 124 passengers and 7 crew members on board around 9 p.m. when the fire broke out.  Everyone was evacuated from the flight while firefighters put water on the flames.

The passengers exited the plane using emergency chutes and were then taking to the terminal on a bus.  United said that five people suffered minor injuries.

A ground stop was in place for about an hour, with Newark Airport reopening around 10:30 p.m.
